rheumatoid, arthritis, pain, early, treatment, swelling, inflammationMany people are giving up soda as part of their New Year’s resolution for better health. For women, the benefits extend beyond possible weight loss. A recent study found that women who drink one or more sugar-sweetened sodas a day are significantly more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis.

For older women, the risk appears to be even higher, according to the study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Rheumatoid arthritis – commonly called RA – is a disease of the immune system. Roughly 1.5 million Americans have RA. It causes the immune system to attack healthy cells. As a result, joints can fill up with fluid causing pain and inflammation. Sometimes, the inflammation can affect the skin, heart and lungs.

During the study, researchers found that women who drank more than one sugary soda daily were 63 percent more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than those who drank less than one per month.

The study does not prove soda causes rheumatoid arthritis but shows a link between drinking pop and rheumatoid arthritis risk.
