Lower back pain can wreak havoc on your ability to do basic things throughout the day. Only a few people will never have lower back pain at some point in their life. In fact, eight out of 10 adults are likely to experience lower back pain at least once.

The good news is that most cases of lower back pain tend to resolve on their own.

Acute low back pain can last a few days to a few weeks before disappearing. Subacute low back pain can last up to three months.

If you have pain that persists longer than that, it’s considered chronic back pain. It usually happens after you’ve injured yourself. Maintain a healthy weight: If you’re overweight, the extra pounds you carry can strain your back muscles. If you need help losing weight, talk to your doctor about successful strategies that will work for you.

Exercise: People who are not physically fit are more likely to have back pain. Keep your back and core muscles strong to help support your spine. Don’t overdo it at the gym on the weekend. Try to fit exercise into your schedule throughout the week.

Manage stress: One of the ways stress affects the body is by causing muscle tension. This can contribute to lower back pain. Take a yoga class or learn relaxation techniques to minimize stress in your body. Ask your orthopaedic specialist if yoga is right for you.

Check your workstation: You can prevent lower back problems by making sure your workstation promotes good posture. Make sure your chair is raised or lowered to an appropriate height. Check the height of your desk and monitor to make sure you’re not straining your back all day while you work.

Wear proper-fitting shoes: High heels and shoes that don’t give you enough support can lead to back pain. Ask your orthopaedic specialist if you need to wear shoes that have a built-in orthotic for arch support.
