This weekend we “spring forward” and lose an hour of the day. Exercise works best with the right equipment. Keep in mind these tips when you head to your favorite sporting goods store to buy shoes:
Size up. Your feet – your toe joints in particular – need room to move inside your shoes as you walk or jog. Choose a shoe that fits snugly, and you risk bruising and/or problems with toenails. As you try on shoes, you may want to look for a size or half-size larger than your foot. Be sure to leave a thumb’s width between the tip of your long toe to the front of the shoe so there’s room to wiggle.
No breaks. Did you experience tight, near painful shoes as a child when your parents shopped for new school clothes? Likely, you were told that you needed to “break in” new shoes by walking around in them. In truth, a shoe – especially for athletics – should not pinch or fit tight when you first put it on. When you shop, choose a style that feels comfortable that works with your socks.
Absorb shocks. Regardless of the intensity of your walking or jogging pace, your feet (especially your heels and ankles) do the work and take the brunt of the impact. Your shoe should have a good heel that helps absorb the shock during exercise.
